On our first day back in Ireland it quickly became clear that a lot has happened in the last two years. When we last graced Kildangan, Sea The Stars was still only a nice two year old, and possibly not even the best in his stable!!! Now he’s made history. It’s a reminder that this industry runs as swiftly as the horses that we all follow so passionately!
Around the world we have been exposed to almost every facet of the thoroughbred industry, and now our focus changes to business. Our next mission is to adopt the mindset of ‘Entrepreneurs’. Lectures from Cathy Grassick (Brian Grassick Bloodstock Ltd), Barbara White (Horse Racing Ireland) and Graham Ross (Betfair Ireland), along with a workshop hosted by Karen Jackson of Smurfit Business School at UCD, have added to our understanding of the business side of things, and have helped to put us into the entrepreneurial state of mind.
In the past four weeks we have had visits to some of the very best farms, consignors and businesses in Ireland. We spent a fantastic morning down in Bansha, Co Tipperary with Con, Teresa and Mary Marnane, complete with tea and homemade scones (much to the delight of the entire team). Jim McCartan and his wife gave us a tour of their lovely property, topped off with another fantastic spread (Irish hospitality is surely second to none!). Peter Kavanagh of Kildaragh Stud gave us some valuable insights into how he has carved out his lucrative niche in the breeding industry. We then travelled to Co Meath, where Bill Dwan of the Castlebridge consignment gave us some advice on managing and growing a business to ensure it will last into the future.
A trip to Connollys Red Mills feed company in Goresbridge was another highlight of our month back in Ireland. We were treated to the complete tour package, including viewing their state-of-the-art facilities and gaining some insight into their successful business techniques through a case study designed for us by Michael Connolly. All of this travel has enabled us to see more of the beautiful Irish countryside. When the sun shines in Ireland (and thankfully, it’s been shining almost nonstop) there’s no place like it!
One of the features of the month was the Punchestown Festival, which enjoyed unprecedented attendance this year. A great day was had by one and all. Charlie ‘I Love National Hunt Racing’ Vaughan-Fowler almost backed a few winners! It was great to see some top class action over the hurdles, and it is even rumoured that Billy Ajello might be considering making a ‘jump’ into the National Hunt scene!
As our first month here in Ireland nears completion, we are all getting ready to head off on our final work placements. Three will remain in Ireland (Jimmy, Sorrel and Bill can’t seem to get enough of our lovely haven!) while Melanie ventures into France (ready to put those French A levels to good use). Billy is the most adventurous this time, and will be spending four weeks in Hokkaido, Japan. The rest of our group will be in England, and are gearing up to enjoy some seriously good racing this weekend. We’ve all chosen our favourites for the English Guineas and Kentucky Derby, and this coming Saturday will see who the champion handicappers in the group are!
As our international tour nears completion, it’s time to start looking to the future and preparing to hit the ground running. We’re all working furiously on the famous DFS business plans, but we’re still managing to enjoy the last leg of our journey.
Until next time, Sorrel and Mick signing off from the Emerald Isle.
