
During their final week in Newmarket the trainees visited Juddmonte Farms Stud and The National Stud and saw the stallions at both locations. Despite the cold weather they enjoyed discussions with the management about the stallions and the breeding industry in the UK. At Shalfleet training stable they met with trainer Jeremy Noseda and his assistant, Darley Flying Start graduate Tom Morley. They discussed the daily routine with Jeremy and his approach to training and they got to see some of the horses during morning exercise. They also enjoyed talking to Tom Morley about his current role and the Darley Flying Start experience.
The trainees completed their insurance assignment on December 10th. They attended a farewell drinks reception at Dalham Hall Stud attended by Darley management and some of the speakers who had supported Darley Flying Start in the UK. On December 17th they departed Newmarket for Christmas Holidays. The trainees commence the USA phase of the programme on January 4th.
Joe Osborne met with the trainees in Australia and discussed the Dubai phase of the course with them. Later in the week the trainees each gave a 15 minute presentation on their work placements to the class which was useful to share and compare their experiences. The evening before they departed Darley, Kelvinside they were each presented with their Equine Nursing and Leadership module certificates at a reception at Darley, Kelvinside. This was attended by Darley management and speakers who had supported the course in Australia. They departed Darley, Kelvinside on December 16th and will re-commence the programme in Dubai on January 3rd.
Clodagh Kavanagh travelled to Tucson, Arizona on December 6th to attend the Annual Symposium of Racing & Gaming which had over 600 delegates. Clodagh was keynote speaker at “The Big Sport of Turfdom” awards lunch during which she spoke on education, leadership and Darley Flying Start. She hosted a discussion group with a number of students from the University of Arizona Race Track Industry Programme and met with Darley Flying Start graduate Jordyn Brand at the event. Clodagh also visited a number of trainers in L.A. including Doug O’Neill, John Shirreffs, Neil Drysdale and Eoin Harty at Santa Anita and Hollywood Park racetracks. She met with graduate Alex Elliott, who is currently assistant to trainer Eoin Harty.
Applications for the course commencing in 2010 will be accepted from January 1st to February 26th.
